Excerpt from Singing in America

"The definition of truth is the state of being the case. To many, the facts, or the state of their case, is the truth--it's what's real; it's what their experience is, good or bad, like it or not, it is their reality. You know there can be a great sense of empowerment in facing the facts, for once you know what's real, you can learn how to deal with it, and to make the best out of it. There is a lot of wisdom in the "Prayer of Serenity"

"God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

Courage to change the things I can, and

Wisdom to know the difference."

We need the wisdom to know what can and what cannot be changed, or we could be singing with conviction, reinforcing the state of our case, no matter how untrue and destructive or detrimental it may be unto us. The important thing everyone should remember about reality and the truth is that, although closely related, they are sometimes totally different. Just consider our great country, the United States of America. We declared our independence in 1776 with this bold statement, "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." Yet it wasn't until 1865 that slavery was abolished."
